           The Ballon d'Or (French for 'Golden Ball') is an annual individual award which is given to the footballer who is deemed to have performed the best during the previous year.

Since its formation in 1956, the Ballon d'Or has been won by many different players, but no one has been as successful as Lionel Messi. The Barcelona star has won on five occasions, finishing in the top three a total of 10 times. Behind Messi is his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo with four awards and the Real Madrid talisman is hoping to pull level with the Argentine in 2017.

After Messi and Ronaldo, just three players have won the Ballon d'Or three times, with Johan Cruyff shining , and aslo Michel Platini and Marco van Basten. Franz Beckenbauer, Ronaldo, Kevin Keegan, Alfredo di Stefano and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge have each been presented with the accolade twice.
Among the others to have won the award are George Best, Zinedine Zidane, Michael Owen and George Weah, while Kaka, who won in 2007, was the last person outside of Messi and Ronaldo to scoop the prize.

Chelsea and France midfielder N'Golo Kante is on the shortlist for France Football's prestigious Ballon d'Or award.

Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante has been named among the first five nominees for the Ballon d'Or 2017, France Football has revealed.
The prestigious award, which was aligned with FIFA from 2010 to 2015, has been won by either Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi for the past nine years.
Ronaldo picked up his fourth Ballon d'Or last year to move one behind Messi, and the Portugal and Real Madrid forward is odds-on favourite to make it five this time around.
France Football has opted to stagger out the nominees throughout Monday, with Kante among the first five players to be announced.

The Ballon d'Or is judged solely by a panel of journalists after FIFA and France Football ended their partnership in 2015.
In September, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar were nominated as finalists for the Best FIFA Men's Player award.
