Men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Cross River State Police Command shot five suspected armed robbers dead Monday in Calabar. It was gathered the robbers had carried out an operation along IBB Way, but while they were escaping, were intercepted by the SARS squad, who chased them and gunned them down along Barracks Road.
There was a gun battle before the suspected robbers were killed an eye witness said.It was gathered that the vehicle the robbers used was razed by an angry mob after the robbers were killed.
Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident.
“Yes five were gunned down after a gun battle and a chase from SARS at Barracks Road. They had robbed around that axis when our men were alerted and chased them. There was a shootout and five of them were gunned down,” Ugbo said.
She said some weapons and cash were recovered from the robbers.
